I found we can host blogs on a different domain name, but still through blogger. I tried about a week ago,to switch it over to joshrosenberg.net, a name I bought sort of as a joke over the winter: no luck. Some nonsense about DNS and CNAME and jazz. I then tried to follow the instructions on blogger, and I got the same error message no matter what I did with the DNS and CNAME: "this address already is hosting a blog" - which of course was not the case. So I waited 48 hours as a few help topics suggested, made another change after those two days, didn't work, waited another 48 hours, still didn't work (it kept on saying a blog was already hosted at joshrosenberg.net even after I changed the DNS and CNAME through the domain host (eNom)).
So I went to google groups and looked up "blogger host" and there it is - a discussion string of people with the exact same error message, and most of them had purchased their domain through google, and consequently eNom, too. I followed the even more complicated instructions (turns out this error is in the fault of blogger, not the users) and "redirected" it to a new "subdomain" and whaddaya know? joshrosenberg.net works - but only if you type in www before the address, unlike most addresses - but that is a problem for another day.
The moral of this story is two-fold: first, there are always people who have the same situations and problems that you're going through and working with; second, the google groups are the best.
