Religious Studies Department

My boss and fellow crew member were discussing a topic today that I had never heard of before, or thought of: that Religious Studies is unique in that the people studying the field are expected to be disengaged from it, in ways practical or emotional.

Of course that statement is not entirely true everywhere; schools that are strongly based around religion could have professors that teach bible studies courses and who are also the college minister. I think what they meant is that at most secular schools, and then of course our countries public schools, the faculty in religious studies are expected to maintain some sort of distance. For example, if a professor at the University of North Carolina in Asheville taught the history of the old testament, then urged his students to pray to God before they go to bed, that would be thought of as hugely unacceptable.

I mean, this is not the sort of thing that I stay up late thinking about - the things I should be thinking about are:
  1. Calculus test
  2. Last chemistry lab and Chemistry test
  3. Education 1,000,000 dollar presentation
  4. Education final paper
  5. Hydrology presentation
  6. blah blah blah blah blah
Fascinating blog entry here, I am sure. Anyway school is almost out; the weather is nice; the drive back to MI approaches; leaving a lot behind here; don't feel quite ready. AHHH!
