What looks good and what doesn't look good in the garden

I don't know much about gardens beyond looking out the window. It seems that the "cold weather" plants are the ones struggling whereas those more typically "warm weather" do well. This is same pattern as last year, and the "colder" ones seemed to catch up later in the year. This must not be a guy thing.
