The Four Fantastic Truths

I've been meditating on them recently. Aight, I almost fell asleep taking a nap. But a thought crossed this mind: life is suffering (1) and desire causes suffering (3) imply that the suffering in life isn't caused by external things.

Rich, poor
Beautiful, ugly
Safe, threatened
Lucky, unlucky
Chosen, forgotten

Each is something out there. And as far as the truths are going, they aren't causing us suffering. Truth 3 says desire and attachment cause suffering. This is odd because I'm accustomed to thinking it is the content of my life that makes me happy or unhappy.

"Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90 % how you respond"

The Buddhist version of this is more

"Life is 0 % what happens, 100 % how you respond"

Or more accurately

"It's how you respond"

Or more accurately

"It's the response"

Or more accurately

"Respond"

Or more accurately

I'm not sure
